We're happy to launch the second issue of The Bull Calf on the heels of our successful first issue in January 2011. For those of you visiting our journal for the first time, The Bull Calf is a triannual scholarly review journal managed by Kait Pinder and J. A. Weingarten, with editing help from Laura Cameron, Claudine Gélinas-Faucher, and Renaud Roussel. We specialize in reviews of Canadian books and offer seven sections, the first five of which are represented in this issue: reviews of poetry, fiction, and literary criticism; retrospective reviews (on any work published before 2000); group reviews (two or three scholars review one text); chapbook reviews; and dissertation abstracts (a three-to-six-hundred word description of a recently completed Ph.D. thesis). This issue groups established writers such as George Bowering and Jane Urquhart with new and emerging authors such as Dorothy Ellen Palmer, Nico Rogers, and Antony Di Nardo. Our issue includes an equally diverse set of accomplished reviewers, whether from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia (Dr. Shelley Boyd), McMaster University in Ontario (Mike Bennett), or McGill University in Quebec (Dr. Peter Webb).
As always, we are in constant search of strong reviewers for future issues ofThe Bull Calf. Our next issue will feature a thread on Margaret Atwood’s literature, and so we are currently looking for reviewers who are interested in writing retrospective reviews on her fiction and poetry. We are, of course, alsointerested in any suggestions for reviews from authors, reviewers, and presses. See our "About Us" section for more information on how to submit a request to review or be reviewed. We have also started to archive old issues of The Bull Calf. Find them here.
On a final note, this issue is in memoriam of Stephen Potts (December 8, 1977 - March 4, 2011), our colleague and friend.
Welcome to The Bull Calf, Volume 1, Number 2.
